Chapter 14

"I need a lawyer," Nik says. He lounges on a part of the grand gray sectional that expands across the middle of the living room.

"For what? The other women you've blackmailed?" I say, flipping through the pages of an encyclopedia he had on a bookcase. I'm pretty sure he only has this stuff lying around for decoration.

"To protect myself from my family. When you were doing all of that social justice reporting, did you come across any lawyers who worked on helping people get away from their shitty families?" Nik asks, rolling onto his side to look at me. This is the most relaxed he's seemed since we met. As soon as we got back to the penthouse last night, he crashed. As soon as his face hit the pillows, he was out.

"Not any that would work with you," I say.

"Ah," he chuckles. "Why wouldn't they work with me?"

I look up at him. How can he be so dense? "They help people who need help. They're not going to work with a playboy billionaire who exploits his employees and customers."

"Playboy?!" Nik says. His voice shifts up an octave. I can't tell if he's mocking me or sincerely shocked.

"That's the only part of my statement you picked up on?" I close the encyclopedia. There isn't anything that really interests me in there. The only thing keeping my brain from eating itself in boredom is Nik's ass-backwards thought processes.

"How many other women have you seen me with? How many paparazzi pictures are there of me? In general?" he asks. He props his head up with his hand. "I don't think anyone has ever photographed me outside of a charity event or grant ceremony."

"It doesn't matter if there is hard evidence. You are guilty of being a playboy according to the jury of the general public. You're in line with the other philanderers like Vaughn Lyon and Roman Van Dahl," I say as I get up from my seat on the floor.

"I think the word you were looking for was sluts or adulterers. I am nothing like those two." Nik groans. His gaze follows me as I put the book back where I found it.

"Did you just call Lyon and Van Dahl sluts or did I misunderstand you?" I snort. I run my hands over the spines of the various decorative tomes.

"You heard correctly," Nik says. "The shelf to your left is all true crime. That might be more interesting to you."

I take a step to my left. It's not just the shelf, the whole bookcase is true crime books. Packed neatly with paperbacks and hardcovers. I'd ignored this earlier, thinking it was all pulp fiction. "You have a nice collection."

"I brought it in for you. I have no interest in that junk," he says.

I freeze. "You bought these books for me?"

"That's what I said." Nik sighs. I hear the sectional creak as he shifts his weight around. It sounds like he flopped over on his back.

"Why?"

"So you'd have something to do.
